GT vs DC highlights: Jos Buttler stranded on 97 as Gujarat Titans win by 7 wickets (2025)

Shubman Gill, Gujarat Titans Captain, has this to say after the win.

"The way we pulled things back with the ball was impressive. At one stage, it looked like they’d get 230–240, but our bowlers stepped up and brought us back into the contest.We’ve done well chasing throughout the tournament. Even in the last game chasing 245, we stayed in the game right till the end.With Axar still at the crease, we chose to stick with pace to keep things tight and avoid giving momentum away.Personally, it was a disappointing way to get out, but there are plenty of matches left, and I’ll look to bounce back.The way Buttler and Rutherford batted was incredible. They rotated strike well and picked the right moments to attack. Their execution was spot on.We’ve got back-to-back matches now—today and then at Eden. If we can win both, we’ll be in a strong position on the points table."

Jos Buttler, who was the Player of the Match, had this to say after the match.

"Really pleased to come away with two points and a win. It was a beautiful pitch to bat on, and we picked our moments well, building good partnerships along the way.The heat was intense—it really hits you out there. You don’t realize how draining it can be, but it’s part of the challenge. You've got to stay fit and perform under pressure, even in tough conditions.I’ve not kept that well in the last six games, so I was eager to improve. Felt nice to take that catch—it gives you a bit of confidence.It’s been a pleasure. He’s got serious power—can hit sixes from nowhere. That over against Mohit, where he hit two sixes, swung momentum our way. Of course, you want to get a century, but the main thing is winning the game. I had my chances but couldn’t convert. I told Rahul not to worry about me—we needed to finish the match. He’s done it many times before, calm under pressure and finding the fence from ball one."

With this win, Gujarat Titans have managed to rise to the top of the IPL 2024 standings while Delhi Capitals slip to second spot. Both teams have 10 points each. But Gujarat have a net run rate of 0.984 while DC's NRR is 0.589.

Meanwhile Sai Sudharsan is on top of the Orange Cap race with 365 runs from 7 games while Nicholas Pooran is second with 357 runs. Jos Buttler, meanwhile, rises to third with 315 runs while KL Rahul, who we also saw in action torday is fifth with 266 runs.

Gujarat Titans' Prasidh Krishna is also on top of the Purple Cap standings with 14 wickets while Delhi Capitals' Kuldeep Yadav has 12 wickets.

Jos Buttler stranded on 97 as Gujarat Titans win by 7 wickets. A six and a four from Rahul Tewatia who finishes off the game in style!

The first ball of the final over was sent for a maximum by Tewatia! That's just the second ball he has faced today. Coming at his body at 90 miles. No worries, he slaps it for a maximum. And then, he gets a feather touch to send the next ball for a boundary!

Mitch Starc is handed the ball for the final over! He has his chance of redemption after giving up five fours in a row. The man who tormented him, Jos Buttler, is at the non striker's end with Gujarat needing 10 runs off 6 balls.

Buttler is batting on 97 off 54 balls.

Incredible penultimate over from Mukesh, who concedes just four runs off the first four balls of the 19th over. then on the fifth ball, he manages to get Sherfane Rutherford to hand an easy catch to long-off. Gujarat are happy to ask for a review, claiming it was a high full toss. Buttler gets some fluids inside his cramping body. And the review shows that the ball was 30 centimetres below the batter's waist.

Rutherford in on strike. But all eyes will be on the massively cramping Jos Buttler, who is four runs short of what would be a famous century!

In case you missed it, a few overs back Buttler (96 | 53b | 11x4 | 4x6) creamed Starc for five boundaries in a row off the first five balls of his over, then hit by a bout of cramps, he went down and could not complete the set by hitting the final ball for a four as well.

At the end of 14th over, Sherfane Rutherford was on 31 (off 22 balls with 1x4 and 3x6) while Jos Buttler was on 57 (36 balls with 4x4 3x6).

After the next two overs, Sherfane Rutherford has scored two runs from two balls. Buttler meanwhile scored 25 off 10 balls and raced to 82 (46 balls with 10x4 and 3x6)

The partnership for third wicket has now crossed 102 runs and its come off 58 balls. Buttler and Rutherford have killed off this game.

Buttler cramping up bad. So the batters cannot run freely, but that should not matter if Buttler is slashing, swatting and tonking away at the ball like that!

Four deliveries that were pitched up by Starc. Four boundaries by Buttler. Then, Starc pitches it up with a shorter one which is slapped away. The fielder at deep square, Vipraj Nigam, tries to catch it, cannot, and its a fifth four! We have one more delivery left in that over. 20 runs already.

What a shot it was from Buttler to welcome back Starc into the attack. Chips the ball over the cover fielder for a four on the off side. Just made room and hit it.

And right after that fifth ball, Buttler is down with cramps as we have a timeout!

An interesting stat shown on broadcast before the Buttler assault:Both teams were at 146 runs after 14.2 overs. Only, Gujarat has lost one less wicket!

Vipraj Nigam gives away 10 runs in the 14th over. And it's a decent battle between him and the GT batters.

"Batsman kya karega uska mat soch (Don't think about what the batter will do)," KL Rahul tells young Vipraj Nigam after he errs slightly and Buttler punishes him for a four.

Two balls later, he tosses up the ball which evades Rutherford's blade!

"Pressure uspe hai! Usko chhaka marna hai, terko sirf dot ball dalna hai (Pressure is on him, he has to hit a six, you just need a dot ball)," says Rahul.

Rutherford manages a four anyway off the next ball.

Gujarat need 66 runs off 36 balls

The Gujarat Titans impact player Sherfane Rutherford is finally having an impact. He tonks three sixes in the space of four balls as he gets his eye in finally. Two of those maximums came against Mohit Sharma, who concedes 18 runs in the 13th over!

And Jos Buttler also gets to his 50 with a glorious drive at the end of that over. It's taken the England batter just 32 balls to get to the half century!

The 50-run partnership also comes up.

Gujarat Titans need 76 runs off 42 balls.

So Delhi have managed to rein in the free flow of runs for the Gujarat Titans right after the wicket of Sai Sudharsan. Building pressure as boundaries are getting harder to come by.

Buttler is there in the middle, within touching distance of his half century. But even he's facing some discomfort out in the middle, possibly because of cramps.

Rutherford is playing at a run a ball, which is a lot slower than Gujarat demand from him at this stage.

Just four runs off the 11th over.

Gujarat Titans are 98/2 after 11. Their current run rate is at 8.90. They need a run rate of 11.77 with 106 runs needed off 54 balls.

What a breakthrough from Kuleep Yadav here, who is introduced into the attack and gets the wicket of Orange Cap holder Sai Sudharsan for 36 on just his third ball!

The ball was slightly short and Sai Sudharsan though he could hoick it over the fence. But the ball flies into the hands of the fielder Stubbs at deep midwicket.

Gujarat Titans have put the sword to Delhi bowlers despite losing the wicket of captain Shubman Gill.Sai Sudharsan claims Orange Cap in the process while GT are batting at 11 runs per over.

The two batters bring up their 50-run partnership in just 24 balls!

So Gujarat bring up their 50 with two maximums from Buttler on the second and third ball of the over by Vipraj Nigam. The first six was hit straight over the bowler's head while the second one disappeared over the wide long-on.

Buttler is struggling a little with what looks like cramps. That would be natural since he kept wickets for 20 overs in the first innings.

Vipraj Nigam ends his first over with 14 runs against his name!

Sai Sudharsan and Jos Buttler have come out swinging in response to the loss of their first wicket! 27 runs off the 14 balls they have faced since they lost their captain's wicket!

Axar Patel, who battled cramps in the first innings and still top scored for Delhi, is back with the ball. His first over ends with him giving away 12 runs.

So Starc is hit for two fours off the first two balls from Sai Sudharshan. On the fourth ball, he hits Buttler straight in the groin! The England star's hurt, but finally get sback up and is good to go again.

Then, on the sixth ball, Starc runs in but dows not bowl. Instead, he stares pointedly at Sai Sudharsan's bat. Sai Sudharsan is miles ousides the crease. Buttler at the othe end was going for a scoop.

And then on the final ball, we have a review from KL Rahul for a wide ball. It takes time, but the review is upheld!

After three overs, Gujarat are 29/1

Shubman Gill is run out for 7 runs as Gujarat lose first wicket with just 14 runs on board! That was a terrible call from the GT captain. The ball went quickly to Karun Nair at mid-wicket and Subhman was committed to taking that run. Karun Nair had all three stumps to aim at and made the most of it. Shubman has some words of despair for his opening partner. But it was purely Shubman's fault!

Gujarat Titans 14/1 after 1.4 overs

So Delhi have set a target of 204 runs with Prasidh Krishna taking four wickets for 41 runs. It's a good batting track and Gujarat are at home. Can they chase this down?

Modern-day T20 cricket here with no batter crossing 40 runs. But the team still scored 200.

Ashutosh departs for 37 off 19 after trying to go for a big on and holing out at long on. Great first over from Sai Kishore, who has given away five runs off four balls and then taken a wicket in what's Delhi's final over!

One ball left.

Ishant Sharma trudges back after bowling his third over and giving away just 19 runs. That third over in particular sees him give away six runs. Despite that he exchanges words --- that's an unfair assessment, it was more like him saying a piece of his mind to Ashutosh Sharma --- about the last ball of the innings. On his first attempt to bowl the 6th ball, the umpire called it a wide for being too high. And then, ishant tried one more bouncer which hit the shoulder of Ashutosh. Ishant appealed hard, but it was not given, he's not happy with that!

FIve minutes after the over is done, Ishant seated in the dugout and is still mumbling. Ishant is subbed out by Gujarat.

"Bad news for Ishant is that there are about 70 steps he has to take to get to the changing rooms here," joked the commentator.

Meanwhile, Sai Kishore is handed his first over of the game. It's the 20th over of the innings! And Gujarat have been penalised for the late over rate.

Prasidh Krishna's over started with two wickets in two balls. And Ashutosh Sharma ensures it ends with two back-to-back sixes on the 4th and 5th balls.15 runs off the 18th over and two wickets for Krishna, who ends his day with figures of 4-0-41-4.

And Ishant Sharma is back in attack! Seems to be good after battling cramps and dehydration in the middle of the innings.

The cramping Axar Patel is sent packing by Prasidh Krishna, who was also cramping earlier.

Delhi captain, hampered by the cramps, tried to go for broke and ended up hitting the ball into the gloves of Buttler. Axar departs for 39 leaving Delhi Capitals at 173/5.

And on the next ball itself, Vipraj Nigam departs with Buttler taking another catch behind the stumps. And this catch is even better than the first one. He was going to the leg side, then saw Vipraj trying to tickle the ball to the boundary and flew to the other side for a one-handed catch! Prasidh Krishna was on a hat-trick! But Donovan Ferreira, who is called in as DC's Impact Player, fends off the ball.

Anotehr cramping incident as Prasidh Krishna is now down just after Axar Patel recovered. The heat is overpowering here. in the commentary box, there are a few jokes as Sunil Gavaskar is doing how he is holding up in the heat!

"I can go and do a bit of running as well just now. No problems at all," laughs Gavaskar.

Axar Patel, Ishant Sharma and Prasidh Krishna certainly will not be on the same page as Sunny G.

"It's like an oven!" remarks one commentator as a video collage plays of players toweling themselves off. A 41 degrees Celsius game here in Ahmedabad. The stadium announcer is trying her best to rally the home fans with the cliched "We want..." war cry. Very muted "sixer" being heard from people in the stands as a reply. It's that hot even the fans probably just want some clouds in the air rather than sixes and fours!

Meanwhile, Ishant is back on the field, after visuals of him sitting on the floor near the ad boards. He was being towelled off by two team members like he was a boxer.

And now we have Delhi captain Axar Patel who is down with a cramp. And that will lead to a stoppage!

Siraj gets rid of the dangerous Tristan Stubbs for 31 (21 balls) as Delhi Capitals lose 4th wicket for 146 runs. Stubbs tried to hit a reverse scoop but Siraj anticipated that and bowled a swinging yorker that the batter can only send comfortably into the hands of Krishna.

Out walks Ashutosh Sharma with six overs left!

So Shubman Gill asks Rashid Khan to bowl out his quota of overs. And he almost gets a wicket! He manages to induce a massive top edge off Tristan Stubbs. Rashid runs back and almost collides with the fielder who comes running from the deep. Rashid drops it.

To make matters worse, on both sides of that drop, there are two maximums from the Delhi batters. Stubbs hit the first one and Axar hit the next!

15 runs come off the 14th over! And Delhi Capitals are 146/3

Former India pacer Ishant Sharma off the field after ending his second over and is seen sitting near the advertising boards as the heat seems to have taken its toll! All through the over, he was seen walking back with hands on hips. It's 41 degrees out there in Ahmedabad!

"He looked to have stumbled a little as he walked off the field. The heat could have gotten to him in the field," says Sunil Gavaskar in the commentary box before adding, "It's getting to us even in the air conditioned commentary box."

Meanwhile, Delhi have managed to score 131/3 after 13 overs

Karun Nair departs after he tried to slap the ball over the third man for a six, right after hitting a boundary on the first ball. But Nair's luck doesn't hold. Arshad is there and takes a great catch while falling on the ground near the ropes. Prasidh Krishna has another wicket!

The third man was really fine which might have caught Nair just off guard! Delhi slump to 93/3

Just seven runs off the first over from Rashid Khan here! But Gujarat Titans need him to claim wickets! He's managed just four wickets in IPL 2025 in six innings with 22 overs bowled.

He needs to change that stat. Gujarat need him to change that!

Delhi Capitals are 89/2 after 8 overs

Prasidh Krishna has been a weapon for Gujarat in IPL 2025. And he's delivered here for the hosts --- well, almost --- when the Delhi batters were speeding away.

Just five runs --- all singles --- off the first five balls. But that gets ruined as Axar Patel slashes at the ball and it flies off to the boundary.

Delhi are 82/2 after 7 overs.

Rashid Khan comes in instead of Arshad.

Karun Nair picks up where KL Rahul left off, picking up boundaries at will against Arshad Khan. The ball is flying off the bat here!

Nair first hit a four on the fourth ball of the 6th over between short third and backward point. A delicate placement. And then comes the hammer blow on thenext ball: a six over deep square leg. 14 runs in the sixth over!

Delhi are 73/2 after the powerplay overs and this is the best Powerplay performance from Delhi Capitals this season.

KL Rahul is walking back! He's out LBW with a ball that nipped and hit him straight on his toe. He tried to figure out whether to appeal. But then decides against it.Rahul's innings is done after a 13-ball 28. He was in some form!

Captain Axar Patel walks out

KL Rahul scoring runs for fun here. A tickle down todeep fine leg for a boundary on 3.4 and then opens up the bat face to slap the ball for another four to bring up the team's 50 in just 3.5 overs.

Rahul is out in the middle to replace Porel and he picks up from where the opener left off! Hits a glorious six over long on off Siraj right after a boundary. KL Rahul vs Siraj is turning out to be a treat! The fiery hot Siraj vs the ice-cool Rahul!

it was a six that went 33m high in the air and landed 89m far away into the crowd!

Siraj responds to that six with a bouncer into Rahul's body, which the batter fends off and runs a single. Good start from Rahul here, 12 runs off the first five balls after coming out to replace Porel.

"What a sweet sound as the ball hit the middle of the bat," says Sunny Gavaskar in the commentary box. "That was magnificent."

AbishekPorel what have you done! Gets a nice juicy fulltoss. And he hits its straight at the fielder at mid-on! Just one ball earlier, Porel had rushed out the crease to try and hit the ball and missed it completely.

And now he's thrown away his wicket for 18 runs off 9 balls. KL Rahul out in the middle.

Delhi are 23/1

Shubman Gill is going to be a unhappy captain with what he's seen in the second over!

Arshad starts off with two wides as well just like Siraj! Some swing for sure there. But the bowling lines have been woeful. And then on the second legal ball, Porel creams the ball through the covers. Prasidh Krishna gets to the ball, and misfields as the ball goes for a four!

Gujarat hand the ball to Siraj. He starts off with two wides to the left-handed Abisek Porel. "That would have been a good delivery to a right-hander. But to a leftie, that's just a wide," remarks Sunil gavaskar in the commentary box!

After seeing the first legal ball safely, Porel attacks Siraj. He hits the second legal delivery for a lofted off drive that is stopped, but the fielder touched the ropes. On the third ball, Porel slaps it over the ropes at deep backward square leg for a maximum. And the fifth ball is driven past the bowler for a four. "Proper cricketing shot," remaks Gavaskar in commentary.

After one over, Delhi Capitals are 16/0 with Porel on 14 runs.

At the other side, no changes for Gujarat Titans.

Axar Patel, the captain of Delhi Capitals, spoke before the game started about being confused on what to do if he had won the toss. He called it a good toss to lose.

"I also wanted to field. I was confused as it was that hot. I was a little skeptical due to the weather. The bowlers might get tired under the sun. We will look to score well and look to defend. We wanted a good start. We wanted to focus on the process. We are focussing on our process and execution. We keep talking about improvements. The dressing room atmosphere has been good. It is important to be clear in your ideas. We have given them clear roles. You might get success sometimes and sometimes you won't get it. Jack is not playing well," Axar said.

Shubman Gill wins toss. Gujarat will bowl first!

Axar Patel says "Good toss to lose. I also would have losed to bowl as well, but was confused. Garam itna hai... So was confused."

Michael Clarke says that he expects the team that wins the toss to bat first.

"It's hot! 41 degrees. I expect the team that wins the toss to bat first, get some runs on the board and build pressure. This wicket has been an absolute standout. It's consistent whether you bat first or second. It's a day game, so no dew," says the Australian in his pitch report.

At the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Delhi Capitals have taken on hosts Gujarat Titans twice in IPL history. Both games have been won by the visitors.

Delhi also come into this game as the league leaders while Gujarat are third in the standings with four wins and two defeats.

Former West Indies cricketer Daren Ganga says that today's IPL clash will be played on Pitch no 6. Ganga points out that three matches previously have happened on the same pitch in IPL 2025. "All teams batting first have gone on to win," he adds.

"It's a beautiful looking wicket. Nice even coverage of grass. But it's rock hard," says Michael Clarke.

Kevin Pietersen, who is the mentor for Delhi Capitals, is back in the team dugout after a short vacation in the Maldives. Ahead of Delhi's clash with Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, the DC social media team posted a clip where team star KL Rahul can be seen roasting Pietersen.

The clip shows Pietersen meeting Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill during a training session on Fridayand then remarking about his role as Delhi Capitals' mentor. “What's a mentor? Nobody knows.”

That's when Rahul quips: “A mentor is someone who goes to the Maldives for two weeks mid-season."

Gujarat Titans' ace spinner Rashid Khan has not had the best of IPLs so far. Having played in six games so far for Gujarat, he has churned out 22 overs. But in those overs, he's managed to claim just four wickets, that too at an economy rate of 9.77 and average of 53.75.

Those are lacklustre numbers for a player in his ninth IPL.

Gujarat are hoping he gets his confidence back!

"As cricketers, whether it is a batsman or a bowler, over a period of time when you're doing well, you get into certain bad habits whether its batting or bowling, with your basics. With Rashid, I think it was his back which was hurting him last year where he had to do a surgery. Sometimes, when you are in so much pain and you're still playing matches, you tend to do something with your action so that your pain is less. I think there have been a few things that we spoke this year after two-three games where he needs to make a few adjustments to his front hand, which was rather closed. It should be facing the batsman when he's bowling. So he's doing that now. And he's bowling better lengths in the last one or two games. Hopefully he gets his confidence back, gets a few wickets, and he'll be the old Rashid Khan again," GT assistant coach Aashish Kapoor said ahead of the game against Delhi.
